Tax-free wellness benefits for employees
Massage at work
Wellness – a valued benefit for employees Wellness is a way of showing that you care about your staff. Many employers today offer massage as part of their wellness benefit. It has become easier for employers to offer tax-free exercise and wellness to employees. Today massage, stress management and dietary advice are also tax-free benefits. The exercise and wellness offer must be aimed at all staff, i.e. every employee, regardless of type of employment. This means the benefit must also be offered to short-term employees, temps and others. Of a simple nature According to the Swedish Tax Agency, "the exercise … must be of a simple nature and of lesser value", and the benefit may not be exchanged for cash. Examples of tax-free exercise are gymnastics, strength training, spinning and bowling, racket sports such as table tennis, tennis, badminton or squash, and team sports such as volleyball, football, handball and bandy. Massage Massage is now also a tax-free benefit (previously it had to be classed as rehabilitation to be deductible for the employer). How much may it cost? There is no fixed limit on how much a tax-free exercise or wellness benefit may cost. According to the Swedish Tax Agency, an annual gym membership at the usual local price is a guideline. Another change is that the exercise and wellness activities no longer have to take place in the employer's own premises or rented premises, be based on a subscription or be collective in nature.
