Pregnant women benefit from massage through, among other things, a better mood and less pain
A group of pregnant women received 20 minutes of massage twice a week for a number of weeks (5 and 16 weeks respectively, in two different studies), while the other group did relaxation exercises over the same period. Both groups reported less anxiety, low mood and pain during the test period. However, only those who had received massage still reported less anxiety, better mood, better sleep and less back pain after the test period ended. They also had higher levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which are part of the body's own reward system, and lower levels of the stress hormones noradrenaline and cortisol. They also had fewer complications during labour, and their babies had fewer postnatal complications, e.g. fewer cases of prematurity and low birth weight. They also scored better on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment.
